Facial Veins

Facial thread veins or broken veins (telangiectasia) are small unsightly superficial red, purple or blue veins that usually occur around the nose but can spread out onto the cheeks. Thread veins occur when the vein dilates and becomes large enough to be visible through the transparency of the skin.

They are caused by a variety of factors including exposure to sunlight, wind and the extremes of temperature. The over use of steroid creams and certain auto immune conditions may also induce thread veins. Often the exact cause is unknown.

Facial vessels are most effectively treated by laser and often several different laser systems are used in combination. Cambridge Skin and Laser Clinic offer 3 laser systems (Nd:YAG, KTP, Pulsed dye) and IPL to ensure optimal results.

How does the treatment work?

Lasers emit high energy at a specific wavelength (or colour) in a single beam. Intense pulsed light (IPL) is broadband light and delivers hundreds of wavelengths (or colours) in a single discharge. Both lasers and IPL are able to specifically target blood (haemoglobin) in the skin without damaging surrounding tissues. The light energy is absorbed by blood inside the veins, heating up the vessel wall, which collapses and then dissolves. Whereas lasers are able to deliver focused pulses of energy to individual larger blood vessels, IPL is more suitable for large areas of diffuse redness or fine ‘blushes’ of vessels.

Which laser and IPL systems do we use?

Cambridge Skin and Laser Clinic offer 4 laser systems to ensure optimal removal of unwanted facial veins.

  • Alma Harmony IPL (540-950nm) (570-950nm)
  • Cynosure Acclaim (1064 Nd:YAG laser 1.5mm/3mm/5mm/7mm tips)
  • Chomogenex NLite V (585 pulsed dye laser)
  • Alma Harmony (1064/532 Nd:YAG laser 2mm/6mm tips)

What does the treatment feel like?

The energy is delivered in very short flashes of light called pulses. As the laser light impacts onto the skin’s surface the sensation is similar to the snap of a thin rubber band. The procedure produces only mild discomfort and usually normal activities can be resumed immediately.

Are there any side effects?

In rare cases redness and irritation of the treated area may occur (like sunburn). There is also a small risk of pigment change following treatment. A small minority of patients develop bruising and blistering. This settles within a few days.

Who performs the treatment?

All procedures at Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic are performed by fully qualified doctors and nurses. We do not employ therapists or technicians to operate our laser systems. To ensure the highest ethical standards are maintained at all times, staff at Cambridge Skin and Laser Clinic are never offered bonus incentives to sell treatments.

How many treatments are needed?

A series of 2 to 4 treatments is recommended at monthly intervals for facial veins.

Is laser treatment safe?

There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest laser treatment can lead to skin disorders or increase the risk of skin cancer. Our laser centre is registered with the Healthcare Commission ensuring the highest of safety for our patients. Our lasers are cleared by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have full CE clearance for Europe.

The initial consultation is free of charge with no obligation to undergo treatment. Costs vary depending on the area treated.

I have just completed treatment for broken veins on my face, I have to say yes I was nervous and worried that treatment would hurt, my fears were unfounded, the results fantastic, after 2 short treatments my broken veins have gone and I am looking forward to bearing my face on holiday – without make up!!!

To anyone thinking should I? Shouldn’t I? Go for it, its well worth it, it has given me a real boost.

Anna, St Ives

Just a quick note to say what a huge improvement my treatment at CSL has made not only to my skin, which after two treatments looked much clearer and less red and "angry". The treatments have also boosted my self confidence and self esteem. So thank you. Best wishes.

I have received a number of treatments to include a full session of acne laser treatments, IPL on my face for redness and three RF treatments on my stomach. The procedure did not require a lengthy amount of time and they are relatively painless, and easy to tolerate. I am very pleased with the results of the procedures. There are no miracles and it takes time, Dr Holt is a knowledgeable doctor who really works with his patients and he is someone I trust. He was able to determine the best treatment for my needs and recommended ways to approach the desired resolve. I extend my thanks to both Dr Holt and CSL who have helped me a tremendous amount.
