Hyperhydrosis

Hyperhydrosis is excessive sweating. Sweating is one of the most important ways in which the body loses heat, however people with hyperhydrosis produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature. It is thought that about 1 person in 200 has some form of hyperhydrosis.

The exact cause of hyperhydrosis remains unknown, genetics may play a role as many sufferers have relatives with a similar problem. Hyperhydrosis commonly affects the underarm (axilla) sweat glands, but can also affect the palm of the hands or the feet. The precise mechanism that triggers the condition is unclear, but appears to be related to a malfunction in the part of the nervous system that regulates involuntary bodily functions (those we do not exert conscious control over). Excess signals may be sent to the sweat glands to perspire, or the sweat glands may overreact to those signals.

Depending on the severity of the symptoms, the treatment of hyperhydosis may require one or more approaches. Initially self-help measures may be useful:

  • cool clothing made from natural fibres
  • avoiding certain foods which may trigger sweating
  • reducing stress, tension or anxiety
  • increased attention to personal hygiene.

Aluminium chloride is the active ingredient of some roll-on or aerosol anti-perspirants. It is used in stronger solutions to treat hyperhydrosis. The effects only last for 48 hours. Some sufferers require surgery in the form of endoscopic transthoracic sympathectomy (ETS). A less invasive, but very effective treatment is to inject Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox) into the armpit.

Botox is licensed for severe underarm sweating that is not adequately managed with topical treatments. Botox works by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat gland. When the sweat glands stop receiving the chemical signals, the severe sweating stops.

How soon does the treatment work and how long does it last?

Effects of the treatment commence within the first week and a significant reduction in underarm sweating is usually evident within 4 weeks. The treatment lasts an average of seven months before further injections are required.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are generally infrequent and rarely troublesome. There may be increased sweating in other parts of the body and even more rarely there may be slight muscle weakness. These effects disappear within 4 months without requiring additional treatment.

Who is not suitable to have Botox injections?

It is not suitable for people with neuromuscular transmission disorders (e.g. Myasthenia Gravis), chronic respiratory problems, coagulation disorders, pregnant women, breastfeeding mums, if there is a history of allergy to the injection ingredients or infection at the injection site or if the patient is taking any of the following medications – aminoglycoside antibiotics, anticoagulants, aspirin or muscle relaxants.

For the past 5 years I’ve had a lot of problems with sweating of the armpits which caused me lots of problems with socialising and wearing certain types of clothing.

I sought medical advice from my GP but his treatment wasn’t really helping. I researched on the net and came across Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic, called them the same day and they reassured me Botox was safe and would last up to 6 months. It’s been 5 months and hardly a drop of sweat – it’s amazing.

The best thing about Botox is its painless. I would recommend Botox for sweating to anyone, it’s a miracle treatment.
