Hair Removal

The presence of hair in certain regions of the body, may be acceptable for some people, but not for others. Unwanted hair is a real problem for many people and can be uncomfortable to live with. With our laser hair removal treatment, the Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic team can help.

Treatment Approaches

There are a number of traditional methods of removing unwanted hair: shaving, plucking, waxing, depilatory creams and electrolysis – all of which can be painful, time consuming and expensive over time. Shaving may last a day, waxing a couple of weeks, but none of them last forever – and therein lies the true beauty of laser hair removal.

Laser Technology

Since 1995, lasers have become the ‘gold standard’ method of hair removal. More recently intense pulsed light systems (IPL) have increasingly been used as an alternative.

Before treatment

After treatment

Not all lasers are equally effective for all the different combinations of hair types and skin colour. For this reason, Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic offers the following laser systems to ensure optimal hair removal:

  • Alexandrite 755nm laser ideal for the treatment of lighter skin types (I-III), large areas, light and dark hair, coarse and fine hair
  • Diode 810nm laser ideal for slightly darker skin types (VI-V) dark hair, pain free if used in SHR mode
  • Nd Yag 1064nm laser for the treatment of darker skin types (VI) larger deeper hairs and ingrowing hairs
  • Ruby 694nm laser for the treatment of very light skin (I-II) very fine hairs and small body areas
  • IPL 650 – 950nm light source – available at client request

A ‘jack of all trades but a master of non’ In general an IPL is less effective for a given task than a laser dedicated to that specific purpose.

Because we offer the entire range of hair removal lasers and IPL we can truly recommend the system that is best suited to your individual hair and skin type. Whichever system we recommend, you can be assured that we are not using it because it is all we have to offer but because it is the best choice for you.

Our expert medical team has in excess of 20 years laser hair removal experience and have completed more than 100,000 successful treatments. Rest assured you are in safe hands. All procedures at Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic are performed by fully qualified doctors, nurses and practitioners. To ensure the highest ethical standards are maintained at all times, staff at Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic are never offered bonus incentives to sell treatments.

We are a CQC (Care Quality Commission) registered clinic that is regularly inspected and assessed by government. This is the best indicator available that the clinic is trustworthy.

How does hair grow?

Hair is made up of a shaft and a root. The shaft is the hair you see and the root is buried beneath the skin. The normal growth cycle of hair includes anagen (active hair growth), telogen (resting phase), and catagen (where the hair falls out). The length of the cycle varies but continues throughout an individual’s lifetime.

How does the treatment work?

Lasers and IPLs deliver a short burst of light onto the skin’s surface. The light is converted into heat at the hair follicle. Heating the follicle stops any further regrowth of the hair. Lasers emit high energy at one specific wavelength (colours) in a single beam of light. Intense pulse light (IPL) is broadband light energy that delivers hundreds of wavelengths (or colors) in a single discharge. The light is passed through filters to produce red light at 650 – 950nm. If the hair is in its growth stage (anagen) the heat can be transmitted down the hair shaft to the base of the follicle destroying the germination centre responsible for its regrowth.

How many treatments are needed?

On average 3 to 6 treatments are needed at 6 to 10 week intervals. The exact number of treatments depends on several factors including hair colour, skin colour, hair density and the site of hair growth.

Can all hair colours be treated?

Lasers and IPL work best on dark hair because the pigment melanin absorbs the laser light. Fair hair can respond well, but white hair, grey hair, very blond hair and some types of red hair respond poorly to lasers and IPL’s unless stained using a special melanin encapsulating solution.

Can all parts of the body be treated?

Using the latest laser technology we are able to treat all areas of the body quickly, safely and effectively.

Is the treatment permanent?

The permanence of laser hair removal is often questioned. In practice no single laser system destroys all hair follicles. Some follicles are destroyed, others are miniaturized and some enter a prolonged resting phase. It is possible that with a sufficient number of treatments, true permanent hair removal can be achieved.

What other treatment methods are available?

There are a number of traditional methods of removing unwanted hair; shaving, plucking, waxing, depilatory creams and electrolysis – all of which can be painful, time consuming or only temporarily effective.

Is the treatment painful?

Powerful cooling devices lower the skin’s surface temperature during the procedure ensuring that most patients experience no more than a mild stinging sensation. We also have lasers that deliver painless hair removal when treating sensitive areas such as bikini, underarms and upper lip.

Are their any after-effects following treatment?

Redness, and some discomfort of the area (like sunburn) may be present for the first few days following treatment. Blistering may occur in a small minority of patients, and this settles without treatment in a few days. Rarely, the pigment in the skin may be affected resulting in the treated area appearing lighter or darker. This almost certainly settles in time.

What is SHR technology?

Most people are now aware that lasers are the ‘gold standard’ method of hair removal but the most common patient complaint is the pain of the procedure. Not any more!

The SHR uses a series of low fluence, high repetition pulses to increase the temperature of both the hair follicle and the surrounding nourishing tissue to 45 degrees C. This gradual heat delivery uses the surrounding tissue as a ‘reservoir’ to heat the follicle. This, along with the heat energy absorbed directly damages the follicle and prevents regrowth.

The result is superb hair removal without pain. On average only 4 sessions are needed at 8-10 week intervals and the treatment is suitable for all hair and skin types. This latest technology is now available at no extra cost.

Who performs the treatment?

All procedures at Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic are performed by fully qualified doctors, nurses and practitioners.

Is laser treatment safe?

There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that laser treatment can lead to skin disorders or an increased risk of skin cancer. Our lasers are fully cleared by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have full CE clearance in Europe.

Our expert medical team has in excess of 20 years laser experience and have completed more than 100,000 successful treatments. Rest assured you are in safe hands. All procedures at Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic are performed by fully qualified doctors and nurses. We do not employ therapists or technicians to operate our laser systems. To ensure the highest ethical standards are maintained at all times, staff at Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic are never offered bonus incentives to sell treatments.

Not all lasers are equally effective for all the different combinations of hair types and skin colour. We offer the complete range of 4 laser systems and IPL enabling us to take advantage of each technologies strengths but not be constrained by its weaknesses.

Expert hair removal requires a skilled laser operator who is able to safely alter the following parameters

  • Wavelength (colour of light)
  • Pulse Width (shutter speed)
  • Spot size (measured usually in mm)
  • Fluence (power)

The appropriate selection ensures optimal destruction of the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin.

Laser Wavelength (Colour of light)

penetration-depths

The selection of the appropriate laser wavelength is crucial as it enables the safe treatment of all skin types. Light-skinned individuals respond well to the Alexandrite 755nm and Ruby 694nm lasers whilst darker-skinned individuals respond to the Nd Yag 1064nm laser. The diode 810nm laser splits the difference.

Skin Type Skin Colour Tanning History Laser
I Very fair, ‘transparent’ Always burns, never tans Alexandrite 755nm
II Fair Always burns, sometimes tans Alexandrite 755nm
III Fair to light olive Sometimes burns, always tans Diode 810nm
IV Olive to brown Rarely burns, always tans Diode 810nm
V Dark brown Very rarely burns tans very easily NdYAG 1064nm
VI Black skin Never burns, tans very easily NdYAG 1064nm

The treatment of different depths of hair follicles. The base of the hair follicle can lie between 2 to 7mm below the surface of the skin. Hence, some follicles are superficial (e.g. upper lip) some are much deeper (e.g. Bikini). The longer the wavelength, the deeper the laser penetration. Optimal results are achieved with multiple wavelengths.

The treatment of different colours of hair. Effective treatment of light coloured fine hair requires a laser with a high attraction to melanin such as the Ruby 694nm laser or Alexandrite 755nm laser. Darker thicker hairs will respond well to the diode 810nm laser or Nd Yag 1064nm laser.

laser-wavelength

Laser Pulse Width (Shutter speed)

The selection of the appropriate pulse width is crucial as it enables the effective treatment of hairs of different diameters.

Fine hairs heat up quickly requiring short pulse widths usually in the range of 5-10ms.

Thicker hairs heat more slowly and require much longer pulse widths usually ranging from 40-60ms.

Often as a course of laser hair removal progresses, the follicles miniaturize and hair becomes finer requiring a reduction in pulse width to ensure continued effective treatment.

laser-pulse-width

Laser Spot Size

Small spot sizes effectively treat smaller superficial hair follicles, while larger spot sizes are ideal for deeper targets. The bigger the spot size the deeper the laser penetration.

Larger spot sizes also enable the rapid treatment of large body areas with ease.

Best outcomes are hence achieved with a large range of different spot sizes.

Laser Power (Fluence)

The higher the power the better the outcome. Any laser system can induce temporary hair loss lasting 1-3 months using very low power. Permanent hair reduction necessitates high quality lasers that can deliver the large amounts of power required to heat the follicle to 65-70 degrees centigrade ensuring irreversible damage to the hair.

Gold Standard hair removal lasers should be capable of delivering the following types of energy.

Short pulse durations with high peak power enabling energy to be confined to smaller hair follicles. Longer pulse durations with low peak power to slowly heat larger hair follicles.

The use of lasers with variable wavelengths, variable pulse durations, variable spot sizes and variable fluences enable the laser operator to take advantage of each systems strengths but not be restricted by its weaknesses.

No matter what the hair colour, skin colour, hair thickness or follicle depth we have a laser for all prospective clients.

The majority of clinics in the UK utilize IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) to deliver hair removal. This is often incorrectly termed Laser Hair Removal (An IPL device is not a laser it is a light source) and described as the superior method of hair removal.

In our opinion an IPL is as a rule far less effective at a given task than a laser dedicated to that purpose.

A suitable analogy is that IPL is like throwing a grenade at a problem versus a sniper, which is a laser – very focused, precise and looking for a specific target.

We consider IPL unsafe for individuals with darker skin types. We also consider IPL ineffective for deeper follicles because its depth of penetration is limited to a maximum of 5mm.

A high quality laser must be accompanied by a skilled operator for superior results.

Although laser treatment may seem expensive, one must bear in mind the enormous acquisition and maintenance costs of the laser devices.

I am 52 and have been having electrolysis for 10 years. I heard about CSL from a friend and after 8 treatments I am so thrilled to finally be hair free and not shave anymore. Thank you to all at CSL you have made my year!

Vera From Trumpington

As a 22 year old student I do not have lots of money but I am delighted that I spent it at CSL. I had to shave 3 times a day and as a girl that was not pleasant to say the least. I am now virtually hair free and have so much more confidence to go out. The staff at CSL always made time for me and I always felt comfortable and well cared for. Thank you all!

Su Lin from Leicester

It was such a surprise to visit a local clinic with better than London standards. I found CSL on the internet and I had always gone to Harley Street before, but they were rude and the treatment wasn’t working. CSL staff were so understanding and friendly and answered all my questions and more.

The clinic is lovely and staff were very professional. The treatment was fantastic. I am now working my way through the other treatments!

Louise from Cardiff

Fantastic to have such a posh clinic on my doorstep. My hair removal has made such a difference to what I can wear and I don’t feel self-conscious anymore. I am telling all my friends.

Clare from Cambridge

I’m getting married in 3 weeks and I will be wearing a bikini on my honeymoon thanks to CSL. They were so friendly and patient and answered all my questions without making me feel stupid. I waxed for so many years and I wished I knew CSL sooner. Thank you all of you!

Roshana from Cambridge

First I would like to thank Dr Nathan for the Class A service that him and his team provided. When I attended the clinic for laser hair removal not only did I get great results with removal of the hair, but it also improved my skin tone and has reduced my acne. I would like to add that I am from an Asian background.
