Rosacea
Rosacea is a condition involving the face that results in a ‘blush’ or redness and progresses from intermittent to consistent. It is associated with prominent blood vessels, open pores and skin eruption similar to acne. Symptoms usually commence between the ages of 30 to 50.

The signs of Rosacea are:-
- Redness of the face or cheeks
- A tendency to flushing or blushing
- Broken blood vessels
- Acne like skin eruptions
- Burning sensation on the face
The cause of Rosacea is unknown and it can not be cured but its symptoms can be controlled to improve the appearance.
Avoidance of triggering stimuli including heat, vigorous exercise, alcohol consumption, spicy foods, hot beverages (particularly caffeine) and rubbing the affected skin helps control symptoms partially. Conventional medical treatment involves either topical antibiotics or oral antibiotics both of which often have limited effects.
As well as conventional medical treatment, Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic offer 2 laser systems (Nd:YAG and Pulsed dye laser) and intense pulsed light (IPL) that can help treat the symptoms of Rosacea.
The treatment of Rosacea depends largely on the severity of the condition and often several treatments are recommended concurrently. A full medical assessment is essential as your treatment may include prescription medication, either oral or topical and IPL either alone or in combination with pulsed dye lasers and Nd:YAG lasers.
Our expert medical team has in excess of 15 years laser experience and have completed more than 40,000 successful treatments. Rest assured you are in safe hands. All procedures at Cambridge Skin & Laser Clinic are performed by fully qualified doctors and nurses. We do not employ therapists or technicians to operate our laser systems. How does the treatment work?
Lasers emit high energy at a specific wavelength (or colour) in a single beam. Intense pulsed light (IPL) is broadband light and delivers hundreds of wavelengths (or colours) in a single discharge. Both lasers and IPL are able to specifically target blood (haemoglobin) in the skin without damaging surrounding tissues. The light energy is absorbed by blood inside the veins, heating up the vessel wall, which collapses and then dissolves. Whereas lasers are able to deliver focused pulses of energy to individual larger blood vessels, IPL is more suitable for large areas of diffuse redness or fine "blushes" of vessels.
Which laser and IPL systems do we use?
Cambridge Skin and Laser Clinic offer 3 different laser systems and IPL to ensure optimal treatment of rosacea.
- Alma Harmony IPL (540-950nm) (570-950nm)
- Cynosure Acclaim (1064 Nd:YAG laser 1.5mm/3mm/5mm/7mm tips)
- Chomogenex NLite V (585 pulsed dye laser)
- Alma Harmony (1064/532 Nd:YAG laser 2mm/6mm tips)
What does the treatment feel like?
The energy is delivered in very short flashes of light called pulses. As the laser light impacts onto the skin’s surface the sensation is similar to the snap of a thin rubber band. The procedure produces only mild discomfort and usually normal activities can be resumed immediately.
Are there any side effects?
IPL and 1064 Nd:YAG lasers - In rare cases redness and irritation of the treated area may occur (like sunburn). There is also a small risk of pigment change following treatment. A small minority of patients develop bruising and blistering. This settles within a few days.
Pulsed dye lasers - The main side effect is bruising in the form of round purple spots (5mm in diameter) that fade after 7 to 10 days. Occasionally blistering and mild crusting occurs, this settles in a few days. Long term side effects such as pigment change and scarring are rare.

How many treatments are needed?
A series of 4 to 6 treatments is recommended at monthly intervals for rosacea.

I have had 4 treatments for rosacea and so far I have found the results very good. There has been a significant reduction in redness, visible veins and flushing is now very minimal. I have found everybody at the clinic very friendly and Dr Holt has been very good at explaining the treatments and effects and answering any questions I have had.

I’d suffered from facial redness for a number of years and as time passed it got steadily worse, so had to wear more and more make up to conceal it.
It really got me down, and I sometimes used to think about having laser treatment, but never went through with it. Just the word “laser” made it sound scary, and I was worried it might go wrong. It was getting engaged and planning for my wedding which finally made me pluck up the courage, although I was still very nervous when I contacted the clinic.
Dr Holt and his staff were friendly, informative and reassuring, and there was no pressure to have anything done. The treatment was exactly as described and I suffered no ill-effects.
I’d left it too late to have the full course before the wedding, but even after a couple of treatments I could see the difference, and was able to wear much lighter make-up on the day. I also felt happy and confident having the photographs taken.
I’d become very good at disguising the redness and only one of my closest friends knew there was a problem, but a number of people have commented lately how well I look and how I could easily pass for someone younger (I’m in my forties).
I’ve still got a couple of treatments to go but have a good idea what the end result will look like, and I’m so pleased I’ve had the work done, not just because of my improved appearance but because I’ve made the effort to do something for me.
It’s really boosted my confidence and self-esteem, and I now feel able to go for walks with my husband without plastering myself in foundation – and enjoy treats like facials, which I’ve always avoided because I was so self-conscious.
